When people ask me where to go for New Year somewhere warm, I’m always tempted to take them straight to our hills above Kandy. The end of the year here has nothing to do with dark afternoons and rushing around. In the morning, mist rises from the valley, eagles circle above the garden and the sun is warm even in the middle of winter. That’s why the idea of a New Year retreat in Sri Lanka makes me so happy.
Where to go for New Year somewhere warm? From the UK, Egypt and the Canary Islands are closest: 22–24 °C by day and a direct flight of under six hours. For real tropical heat of 30–33 °C, choose Thailand, the Maldives or Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka also lets you turn the holidays into a quiet New Year retreat in the hills.

Why see in the New Year somewhere warm (and a little differently)
For more than twenty years, I built one of the largest cultural festivals in Central Europe. Years of intense work and constant movement showed me the limits of our modern lifestyle and of chronic stress – and how precious the moments are when you can truly stop. For me, the turn of the year is exactly that kind of moment.
Late December is the darkest stretch of the year in northern Europe. Around New Year’s Eve, London gets less than eight hours of daylight, while Kandy gets almost twelve – and the afternoon temperature there is around 28 °C (82 °F). But spending New Year abroad doesn’t have to mean simply swapping drizzle for a beach. It can also give you space to ask yourself a few questions: What did this year give me? What don’t I want to carry any further? And what do I want to take with me into the new one?
Between the festive rush, the overloaded tables and the midnight fireworks, there’s rarely room for questions like these. That’s what a New Year retreat is for. Instead of a party that runs until dawn, you get warm days, gentle movement, good food and time for yourself – and a first morning of the year with a clear head.
Where to go for New Year somewhere warm: 7 destinations in numbers
I won’t pretend that Sri Lanka is the only right answer. When you’re deciding where to spend New Year in the sun, three things matter most: how warm it really is, how often it rains and how long you’ll be flying. So I’ve compared seven popular winter-sun destinations using long-term averages from national weather services, with London as a reference point.
| Destination (weather station) | Daytime high, December / January | Rainy days in December | Flight from London (indicative) | Time difference from the UK |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Egypt (Hurghada) | 24 / 22 °C (75 / 72 °F) | under 1 | direct, about 5–5.5 h | +2 h |
| Canary Islands (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) | 23 / 22 °C (73 / 71 °F) | 5 | direct, about 4.5 h | 0 h |
| United Arab Emirates (Dubai) | 27 / 24 °C (80 / 76 °F) | 3 | direct, about 7 h | +4 h |
| Thailand (Phuket) | 32 / 33 °C (90 / 91 °F) | 8 | 14–17 h with one change | +7 h |
| Maldives (Malé) | 30 / 31 °C (87 / 87 °F) | 12 | 10–14 h, direct or with one change | +5 h |
| Bali (Denpasar) | 33 / 33 °C (91 / 91 °F) | – (rainy season) | 17–20 h with one change | +8 h |
| Sri Lanka – coast (Galle) | 30 / 30 °C (86 / 86 °F) | 11 (January: 7) | non-stop about 11 h, or 12–16 h with one change | +5.5 h |
| Sri Lanka – hills (Kandy) | 28 / 29 °C (82 / 83 °F), nights 19–20 °C (66–68 °F) | 13 (January: 8) | as above, plus a 3–3.5 h transfer | +5.5 h |
| For comparison: London (Heathrow) | 9 / 8 °C (48 / 47 °F) | 11 | – | – |
Pros and cons of each destination
- Egypt – the quickest way to the sun, with a time difference of only two hours. Evenings and nights are cool, though (in Hurghada around 13 °C/56 °F on a December night), and the sea is more refreshing than warm.
- Canary Islands – “eternal spring” without a long flight, and on UK time. The Atlantic is cool for swimming in winter and you’ll get the odd shower. New Year’s Eve is celebrated the Spanish way, with twelve grapes at midnight.
- United Arab Emirates – reliable sunshine and spectacular fireworks. It’s more of a city break, though, with high prices and crowds.
- Thailand – the real tropics, and the start of the drier season on Phuket. But New Year is the peak of the season: busy beaches, higher prices and big beach parties.
- Maldives – turquoise lagoons and a warm sea. Prices are among the highest, and your holiday usually plays out on a single resort island.
- Bali – warmth and culture, but December and January are the height of the rainy season, and the journey takes 17 to 20 hours with a change.
- Sri Lanka – a tropical coast and fresh hills on one island, plus Buddhist culture, wildlife and Ayurveda. The flight is long and late December can still be showery, but January is much drier.
If all you want is a few days of sunshine, Egypt and the Canaries win. If you want real summer, a change of scene and time for yourself, the longer journey is worth it. The same goes if you’re thinking ahead to January: on Sri Lanka’s south coast and on Phuket, it’s even drier in January than in December.
Sri Lanka at New Year: why this is a good time to come
Sri Lanka’s weather is driven by two monsoons. From May to September, the south-west monsoon brings most of its rain to the south-west of the island and to the windward slopes of the hills. From December to March, the north-east monsoon takes over, carrying moisture from the Bay of Bengal mainly to the north-eastern slopes of the hills and the east of the island.
For the south coast and the area around Kandy, the turn of the year therefore marks the move into the drier part of the year. The World Meteorological Organization’s data show this clearly: in Kandy, the average number of rainy days falls from 13 in December to 8 in January, and rainfall drops from about 200 mm to 100 mm. In Galle on the south coast, rainy days fall from 11 to 7. Temperatures stay steady – around 28–29 °C (82–84 °F) by day and 19–20 °C (66–68 °F) at night in Kandy, and around 30 °C (86 °F) on the coast.
To be honest, late December is still a transition period, and a shower may well catch you. I love tropical rain – afterwards the whole garden smells wonderful and the jungle around the resort turns even greener. But the weather varies from year to year, so check the current forecast from Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology before you travel.

Sri Lanka is a mainly Buddhist country, and the traditional Sinhala and Tamil New Year is celebrated in mid-April. New Year’s Eve on 31 December isn’t a big national festival with fireworks in every village; it is celebrated mainly in hotels and larger towns. If you’re looking for peace rather than noise, you’ll appreciate that.
The Kandy area is also the cultural heart of the island. Kandy was the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, and it is home to the tradition of Kandyan drummers and dancers. Our resort in the hills above Kandy sits between jungle and tea plantations: close enough to the culture, far enough from the bustle.
Your own New Year retreat: an individual Ayurvedic program over the holidays
And now the part I love most! You don’t need a group or fixed dates to turn the holidays into a retreat. At Yasmin Hill, our individual Ayurvedic programs run all year round, on dates you choose rather than fixed group dates.
Each program includes consultations with the resort’s Ayurvedic doctor, treatments, accommodation and meals (prices as of October 2026):
- The Metabolic Kickstart – Intro to Panchakarma, 7 days, from USD 1,284 – a gentle first experience if you only have the week between Christmas and New Year;
- targeted 10-day programs, such as The Hepatic Detox Program or the Neuro-Repair Program, from USD 1,926;
- The Systemic Detox – Standard Panchakarma, 14 days, from USD 2,600 in a shared room (private room from USD 3,250);
- The Ultimate Cellular Reset – Panchakarma, 21 days, from USD 3,700 in a shared room (private room from USD 4,700).
The airport transfer isn’t included in the programs, but we’re happy to arrange a private transfer on request, for a fee; the drive from Colombo airport takes about 3–3.5 hours. If you’d like to know what a classic Ayurvedic cleanse involves, our guide to Panchakarma explains it step by step.
What the holidays look like in the hills
Yasmin Hill is a small resort with about a dozen rooms and apartments. There’s a large pool, the glass-walled Sati Hall with views across the hills, a newly opened circular tea house and gardens we harvest for our kitchen. You can see what the rooms at Yasmin Hill look like before you book.
Your days follow a gentle rhythm: treatments such as shirodhara or a full-body massage with warm, fragrant herbal oils, light meals, rest, walks and quiet evenings. You’ll find all our Ayurvedic treatments described on the website. Instead of a countdown party, your holiday is about rest, care and waking up on the first of January feeling light.
One practical note: Christmas and New Year are a popular time, we are a small resort, and our Czech-language New Year retreat also begins here on 27 December. So if you’re thinking about the holidays, write to us early and we’ll check availability for your dates.

My tip: Pack a light sweater or shawl. Evenings in our hills are pleasantly fresh, around 19–20 °C, and you’ll be glad of it over a cup of tea.
Hills first, then the ocean
If you have two weeks, here’s the combination I’d recommend: a week or ten days of Ayurveda in the hills, followed by a few days on the south coast, where it’s around 30 °C (86 °F) by day. The drive down from the hills to the coast takes about half a day. First you rest and recover, then you enjoy the beach – and in that order, the sea feels completely different.
Your New Year in the hills above Kandy
Individual Ayurvedic programs from 7 to 21 days, with doctor consultations, treatments and meals, on dates that suit you. 7-day program from USD 1,284 (prices as of October 2026).
For Czech speakers: the New Year’s Conscious Awakening retreat
We host more than twenty retreats a year, and this season one of them begins right at the turn of the year. New Year’s Conscious Awakening runs for 14 nights, from 27 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, and it is held in Czech, with a Czech guide throughout. If you don’t speak Czech, an individual program on your own dates will suit you better. If you do – or if you’re simply curious – here’s how it works.
The retreat is built as a journey in three phases. It begins with a few days in the hills at Yasmin Hill, with full board, the pool, a sauna and evening talks about the limits of the mind. Then comes New Year’s Eve: a festive feast, a ceremony with Ganesha – the deity who, in Hindu tradition, removes obstacles and blesses new beginnings – a Swami’s blessing and a fire ritual, accompanied by Kandyan drummers, dancers and acrobats. After New Year, the group moves south to The Long Beach Resort on the coast, with half board, time on the beach and optional trips to see whales, dolphins and sea turtles.
The group has 5 to 20 people, and the intensity is relaxing – this is not a sports camp. All transfers are included, and a group flight is arranged for participants through a trusted travel agency. Registration runs through the organizer’s partner website, and you’ll find the full program, price and booking details on the retreat page.

Who is Joska Šálek?
Josef “Joska” Šálek is a Czech athlete and teacher who has spent years exploring where the real limits of body and mind lie. In March 2024, Guinness World Records published his world record for the fastest half marathon run barefoot on ice and snow: he completed the course at a mountain lodge in the Czech Republic’s Giant Mountains in 1 hour, 50 minutes and 42 seconds.
He also holds the Czech record for the longest plank and has led firewalks for many years. On the retreat, though, it isn’t about performance. Joska guides the group with talks about the limits of the mind and leads the New Year’s Eve fire ritual.
Firewalking: is it safe?
Walking over hot coals looks impossible, but the physics behind it is fairly down to earth. Physicist David Willey, who has done it several times himself, describes three main reasons why feet usually don’t get burned:
- Charcoal is a poor conductor of heat. It insulates about four times better than dry hardwood, and the layer of ash on top insulates even more.
- The embers have a low heat capacity. Even when they glow, they don’t hold enough energy to pass to the sole of your foot in such a short time.
- Contact is brief. At a brisk walk, each step lasts half a second or less.
Safety isn’t a given, though. Willey himself points out that blisters can occur, most often on the arch of the foot or between the toes. Preparation is what counts: a well-burned, raked bed of coals, a short path, a calm walk rather than a run, and checking your feet afterwards.
On the retreat, the ritual is led by an experienced instructor and taking part is voluntary – cheering the others on is just as much a part of the evening. If you have diabetes, reduced sensation or poor circulation in your feet, injured feet, or if you are pregnant, talk to your doctor beforehand and let the instructor know.
How much does New Year in Sri Lanka cost?
I like our guests to know in advance what to expect. This is roughly what a New Year wellness retreat on your own dates costs per person:
| Item | Approximate cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 7-day Ayurvedic program (The Metabolic Kickstart) | from USD 1,284 | accommodation, meals, treatments, doctor consultations |
| 14-day program (The Systemic Detox – Standard Panchakarma) | from USD 2,600 | shared room; private room from USD 3,250 |
| Return flight from London or a major European hub | approx. USD 700–1,200 | indicative economy fare; Christmas and New Year dates are among the most expensive of the year |
| Airport transfer, Colombo to the resort | on request, for a fee | about 3–3.5 hours by car |
| ETA (entry authorization) | USD 0 | free for UK, US and many EU passports since 25 May 2026; apply online in advance |
| Travel insurance | depends on your insurer | always take it out, ideally with cancellation cover |
| Excursions and extra treatments | your choice | agree the timing with the doctor |
Depending on your flight, a week-long program comes to roughly USD 2,000–2,500 per person and a fortnight to roughly USD 3,300–3,800, before the transfer, insurance and extras – and more if you book holiday flights late. Flights over Christmas and New Year are among the most expensive of the year, so the sooner you decide, the more choice you’ll have.
The Czech-language New Year’s Conscious Awakening retreat has its own package price, which includes accommodation, meals, transfers and the program, but not flights. You’ll find it on the retreat page.
Who a New Year wellness retreat suits (and who it doesn’t)
It will suit you if:
- you want to see in the New Year somewhere warm, but without loud parties and overeating;
- you’re traveling solo and would value calm and space, or you’re looking for a New Year wellness retreat for two;
- you’re drawn to the combination of hills, ocean, Ayurveda and time for reflection;
- you can take at least a week, ideally two, off work.
Choose a different holiday if:
- you want fireworks over skyscrapers at midnight and to dance until dawn;
- you’re after the shortest possible flight or just a long weekend;
- you’d rather not have any daily rhythm at all.
Can’t get away over New Year? Our individual programs run all year round, and January to March is the driest stretch of the year in the hills. You’ll also find our retreats for 2027 – qigong in February, craniosacral therapy and a retreat for leaders – all of them held in Czech.
Practical tips for the trip
Flights over the holidays
From London Heathrow there are non-stop flights to Colombo of around 11 hours. From regional UK airports and most of continental Europe, you’ll usually change planes once, in the Gulf or in Istanbul, so allow 12–16 hours in total. Christmas and New Year are the busiest time of the year for flights, so it doesn’t pay to wait.
ETA and passport
Since 25 May 2026, the tourist Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) has been free for nationals of 40 countries, including the UK, the United States, Germany, France and the Netherlands; Ireland is not on the list. It is valid for 30 days with a double entry, which comfortably covers a stay over New Year. Free doesn’t mean automatic, though: you still need to apply online before you travel, on the official portal, eta.gov.lk.
According to GOV.UK, your passport must be valid for at least six months after the day you arrive. This information was checked on eta.gov.lk and GOV.UK on 27 October 2026; please check it again shortly before you travel.
My tip: Apply for your ETA only on the official portal, eta.gov.lk. For UK, US and many EU passports it is now free, while unofficial intermediaries charge a fee for exactly the same thing.
What to pack for the hills and the beach
- light summer clothes, swimwear, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses;
- a fleece or sweater and long trousers for evenings in the hills;
- clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for visiting temples, where you go barefoot;
- comfortable sandals as well as closed shoes;
- insect repellent, your personal medication and copies of your travel documents.
Time difference
Sri Lanka runs on UTC+5:30 all year, which puts it five and a half hours ahead of the UK in winter and four and a half hours ahead of Central Europe. When the clock strikes midnight in Sri Lanka, it’s only 6:30 p.m. in London and 7:30 p.m. in Paris or Berlin.
My tip: Call home before your midnight. Your loved ones will just be sitting down to dinner, and you can wish them a happy New Year before the celebrations have even started at home.

I look forward to welcoming you
Yasmin Hill grew out of my own transformation – out of the realization that vitality isn’t a question of performance but of balance. As my motto puts it: “Longevity doesn’t come from performance. It comes from harmony with nature, the mind and your inner rhythm.” I can’t think of a better moment to look for that harmony than the turn of the year. If you feel that a week or two of warmth, quiet and care would do you good, take a look at our Ayurvedic programs – my team and I would love to welcome you.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I go for New Year to be somewhere warm?
From the UK, the quickest options are the Canary Islands and Egypt’s Red Sea coast: 22–24 °C (72–75 °F) by day and a direct flight of under six hours. Dubai reaches around 24–27 °C and is about seven hours away. For real tropical heat of 30–33 °C, head long-haul to Thailand, the Maldives or Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka also combines beaches with cool hills, Buddhist culture and Ayurveda.
What is a New Year retreat?
A New Year retreat is a stay built around rest and reflection over the turn of the year, rather than a party. It usually means a calm place, a gentle daily rhythm, movement or meditation, healthy food and time to look back on the past year and set intentions. Some are group programs with a teacher on fixed dates; others, like an individual Ayurvedic program, run on dates you choose.
What is the weather like in Sri Lanka at New Year?
On the south coast it is around 30 °C (86 °F) by day; in the hills around Kandy, about 28 °C (82 °F) by day and 19–20 °C at night. Late December is a transition period and showers are still common: Kandy averages 13 rainy days in December but only 8 in January (WMO long-term averages). At this time of year, the east and north-east of the island get the most rain.
Is New Year’s Eve celebrated in Sri Lanka?
Yes, but more quietly than in Europe. Sri Lanka is mainly Buddhist, and the traditional Sinhala and Tamil New Year falls in mid-April, so 31 December is not a major national festival. It is celebrated mainly in hotels and larger towns. Away from them, the night is usually calm – which suits you perfectly if you would rather start the year rested than hungover.
Can I do an Ayurvedic program over Christmas and New Year?
It depends on availability. Individual Ayurvedic programs at Yasmin Hill run all year round on dates you choose, from a 7-day program at USD 1,284 to a 21-day Panchakarma from USD 3,700 (prices as of October 2026). Accommodation, meals, treatments and doctor consultations are included; the airport transfer can be arranged on request for a fee. The resort is small and the holidays are popular, so write to us and we’ll check availability for your dates.
Is the New Year retreat at Yasmin Hill held in English?
No. New Year’s Conscious Awakening (27 December 2026 – 10 January 2027) is held in Czech, with a Czech guide throughout. If you don’t speak Czech, an individual Ayurvedic program is the better choice: you pick your own dates – over the holidays, write to us and we’ll check availability – and you can add a few days on the south coast afterwards, just as the retreat does.
