Known traditionally as the ‘third eye massage,’ Shirodhara is the ultimate biological “Off” switch for a hyperactive mind. While standard massages work on muscles, Shirodhara works directly on the central nervous system.
The procedure involves a continuous, rhythmic stream of warm, medicated oil poured over the center of the forehead. It induces a state of “alert stillness” similar to deep meditation, but achieved without any effort. It is not just relaxation; it is a recalibration of your brain’s electrical activity.

The term combines ‘shiro’ (head) and ‘dhara’ (stream). Ayurveda views the forehead (Ajna Chakra) as the control center of Prana Vata (mental activity) and Sadhaka Pitta (emotions).
When the mind is overheating with stress or worry, Shirodhara acts as a cooling agent. Unlike the source text suggesting it “stimulates fire,” clinically we use it to pacify excess heat (Pitta) and ground erratic movement (Vata), bringing the mind to a complete standstill.
The constant pressure and vibration of the oil stream stimulate the Trigeminal Nerve (the largest cranial nerve). This stimulation sends a signal to the reticular activating system in the brainstem to lower neural excitability.
This physically forces the brain to shift from high-frequency Beta waves (anxiety, active thinking) to slower Alpha and Theta waves (deep relaxation, REM sleep). Simultaneously, it reduces circulating cortisol and norepinephrine, effectively “cooling down” the brain’s processing unit.
Every session follows a precise sequence designed to prepare the body, deliver the therapeutic intervention, and ensure deep integration. Below is the step-by-step protocol we follow to maximize physiological benefits.
Chronic insomnia, high stress/burnout, anxiety, hypertension, migraines, “tired but wired” feeling, and memory/concentration issues.
Severe sinus congestion (Sinusitis), fever/flu, open cuts on the forehead, or immediately after a heavy meal.
Your head pores are open and your body temperature regulation is sensitive. You must keep your head wrapped and covered for at least two hours to prevent catching a cold or “Vata” shock.
Avoid digital screens, cold wind, and stressful thinking for the rest of the day. Maintain the relaxed demeanor to let the neurological benefits sink in.
